About Angelina County, Texas
Angelina County has a population of around 87,000 located in the east of the state. The county consists of 865 square miles and of these, 798 is land and 67 consists of water. The county was originally formed in 1846 from Nacogdoches County and is named for a Hasinai Native American woman who helped early Spanish missionary settlers. The county seat is Lufkin, with a population of 35,000.
Angelina County has an interesting history as it was the only county in the region (and one of a small number across the state) to reject secession in the 1861. Only nineteen Angelina County men were killed in the Civil War and no Union soldiers entered the county until 1866.
