About Dallam County, Texas
Dallam County is named for James Wilmer Dallam, a newspaper publisher and the lawyer responsible for compiling the first ever book of Texas laws. The county was formed in 1876 and consists of 1,505 square miles, of which only 2 consist of water. The county is at the very northwescorner of the State and borders Oklahoma to the north and New Mexico to the west. The 2010 census showed that the population was 6,703 and has believed to have grown to over 7,000 in 2014.
Dallam County is notable for the annual XIT Rodeo and Reunion, held the first long weekend every August. This event celebrates the XIT Ranch, which covered over three million acres and handled up to 150,000 head of cattle from 1885 to 1912. Spread over three days, the Rodeo includes junior and professional rodeo events, the world’s largest free barbecue, live music and an antique tractor pull.
