About Duval County, Texas
Duval County is located in the south of Texas and was founded in 1858, subsequently reorganized in 1876. It has a population approaching 12,000 spread across 1,796 square miles of land, of which just 2.1 square miles consist of water. It is named for Burr H Duval, a soldier in the Texas Revolution. Burr died in the Goliad Massacre along with approximately 435 other Texans.
Duval County is known for its Mexican character and history; it was the Mexican, Jose Contreras, who first surveyed the land in 1804. The area was settled by European sheep farmers in the mid to late 1800s. The county seat is San Diego, with a population approaching 4,500, and there are two other registered cities: Benavides (population around 1,400) and Freer (population approaching 3,000).
