About Fayette County, Texas
Fayette County was incorporated in 1837 and reorganized in 1838. As at the 2010 census, Fayette County has a population of approximately 24,500 spread over 960 square mile, of which 950 are land the the remainder consists of water. The county is located in the central western region of Texas.
The county seat is La Grange, which has an estimated population approaching 5,000. Both the county and the county seat were named in the honor of the Marquis de Lafayette, who fought with the Americans in the American Revolution. La Grange is named after Lafayette’s castle in France, the Château de la Grange-Bléneau. The city is also notable for its German and Czech influence, which led to it rejecting prohibition in the 1920s and 1930s beyond a trivial effort by the local authorities. And of course, who could forget ZZ Top’s 1973 classic rock song “La Grange?”
