About Gaines County, Texas
Gaines County, located in the north west, was created in 1876 but later reorganized in 1905. It is named after James Gaines, a merchant famous for signing the Texas Declaration of Independence. Gaines County has a population approaching 18,000 spread across 1,503 square miles, although one of these miles consists of water.
The county seat is Seminole, population around 6,500, and known as the birthplace of country music singers Larry Gatlin and Tanya Tucker. Another settlement is Denver City, population of approximately 4,500, which still depends on the oil and ranching industries.
