About Hill County, Texas
Hill County has a population of 35,000 spread over 986 square miles, although 27 of these consist of water. The county is named after George Washington Hill, secretary of both the war the navy under the Republic of Texas. The county seat is Hillsboro, population approximately 8,500, and named after Hill County.
Hillsboro is known for its many antique stores and restored Victorian homes, plus the historic county courthouse, which was damaged in 1993 by a fire. The courthouse was restored thanks to donations around the world, and this renovation is believed to have helped generate interest in restoring Texas’ historic courthouses around the state.
