About Kaufman County, Texas
Kaufman County is located in the north west of Texas and has a population of approximately 23,000 at the time of the 2010 census, spread over 909 square miles of land. The county is named after George Washington Kaufman, a Secretary of War of the Republic of Texas. It was formed in 1876 but organized in 1921. Both the oil industry and cotton farming are important industries for the county.
The county seat is Levelland, which houses more than half of the county’s population. The city is remembered for multiple UFO sightings in 1957, which were attributed to a freak electrical storm by the USAF investigation.
