Lamar County Appraisal District
About Lamar County, Texas
Lamar County, at the north eastern corner of the state, has a population of approximately 50,000 spread over 933 square miles of territory although only 907 of these is land with the remainder being water. The county was founded in 1840 and organized in 1841, named for the second president of Texas, Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar.
The county seat, Paris, houses a little over half of the population and a replica of the Eiffel tower found in Paris, France. The city has a rich history: settlers were living in the area from at least as early as 1824, some 20 years before the city was adopted as the county seat. As Paris resides in Tornado Alley, the city has suffered over the years as well as major fires in 1877, 1896 and 1916. Despite this, in 1997, Paris was named as the “Best Small Town In Texas” by Kevin Heubuch.
