About Live Oak County, Texas
Live Oak County, located in the south of Texas, has a population approaching 12,000 spread over 1,079 miles, although only 1,020 of these consists of land with the remaining 39 square miles consisting of water. The county is named for the groves of oak trees within its borders and the county seat is George West. It was founded in 1856 and still contains numerous ranches.
George West has a population of approximately 2,500 and has been named as the “storytelling capital of Texas” in 2005 by the Texas Senate. It hosts the George West Storyfest, which features storytelling, cowboy music and poetry. The county was named for the cattle rancher, George Washington West. Construction on the town started in 1913 and it was incorporated in 1946.
