Llano Central Appraisal District
About Llano County, Texas
Llano County, central Texas, has a population close to 20,000 and is named after the Llano River and was founded in 1856. It is 966 square miles in size but of these, 32 square miles consist of water. In the past, the county has been supported by the mining farming and ranching industries, supplemented in recent years by hunting, feed processing, insecticide and commercial talc production. Llano County also includes Enchanted Rock, which is designated state natural area and popular tourist destination. Llano County is also the only place in the world where Llanite, a rare type of mineral, is found.
The county seat is Llano, population approximately 3,200. The current county courthouse was constructed in 1893 after a fire destroyed the original brick courthouse: it is listed in the National Register of Historic Places along with Llano jail, the Southern Hotel and the Badu Building, a former bank.
