About Maverick County, Texas
Maverick County is located on the western edge of Texas, bordering Mexico. It has a population of over 54,000 and was created in 1856, subsequently reorganized in 1871. The county is named after cattleman and state legislator, Samuel Maverick; the first rancher on the land arrived in 1765 and to this day, Maverick County still has a considerable ranching community, which has been supplemented by the oil and gas industry.
The county seat is located at Eagle Pass, which houses approximately half of the county’s population. Eagle Pass is the first American settlement on the Rio Grande and was originally known as Camp Eagle Pass, serving as a temporary outpost for the Texas militia. The town was founded by General William Leslie Cazneau 1840s and in 1850, Rick Pawless opened a trading post called Eagle Pass.
