Orange County Appraisal District
About Orange County, Texas
Orange County has a population of over 81,000 across just 380 square miles, although 46 of these consist of water. The county seat is Orange, which houses approximately 19,000 people. The county is located on the coast in the south east of the state and was formed in 1852 from parts of Jefferson County. It was named after the orange fruit, which was grown by early settlers in the region. However, because of periods of cold weather and winter frosts, the fruit is no longer grown in the area – instead the orange groves have moved inland, where winters are warmer and the vulnerable citrus fruit should not be damaged by frosty weather.
In the second world war, Orange County was used as a shipbuilding region by both the US Navy and several allied countries. The Consolidated Steel Corporation was located in Orange and employed as many as 20,000 people at its peak.
