The county is named after the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836: this battle secured Texas’ independence from Mexico. Coldspring traces its history to Stephen F. Austin’s first colony in Texas, settled around 1850. Coldspring was a busy town but in 1915 the original wooden courthouse burned down. The new and current courthouse was rebuilt in 1918 and much of the town’s businesses relocated to be close to the new courthouse. Today, Coldspring is known for having twenty five golf courses around the city.
