About Shackelford County, Texas
Shackelford County is located north of the geographical centre of Texas. The county has a population of approximately 3,400 spread over 916 square miles. The county was founded in 1858 and organized in 1874, named after Dr. Jack Shackelford, a Virginia doctor who paid to equip soldiers to fight in the Texas Revolution. The county seat is Albany, which houses approximately 2,000 individuals and was established in 1873. Albany was named by William Cruger, county clerk, after his former home of Albany, Georgia.
Shackelford County is known for containing the Historic Ford Griffin, established in 1867, and “Texas’ Oldest Outdoor Musical” in the shape of the Fort Griffin Fandangle western musical.
