About Schleicher County, Texas
Schleicher County has a population of approximately 3,500 individuals spread over 1,311 square miles of land. Schleicher was established in 1871 via the Texas legislature from Crockett County. It was but organized in 1901. It is named after German immigrant, Gustav Schleicher, a politician, surveyor of the region, and a veteran of the Confederate Army.
The county seat is Eldorado, which houses a little over half of the county’s population and was founded in 1895 by W. B. Silliman, who named it after the mythical city. In order to help establish the town, Silliman offered free town lots to nearby residents of Verand. In the 1950s, oil was found on school land, which afforded a brand new library and gymnasium to be built.
